Each year, many thousands of men, women and children become disabled due to an accident or illness. Many more are born with a disability which means they need to use a wheelchair.
WheelPower, the national charity for wheelchair sport, provides opportunities, facilities and equipment which enable disabled people to play sport and lead healthy active lives.
Through its member Sports Associations and links with other organisations WheelPower supports individuals to find a sport which they are passionate about. There are a wide variety of sports available including archery, athletics, bowls, cue sports, fencing, handcycling, powerlifting, shooting, skiing, ice sledge hockey, table tennis, tennis, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair
Sport provides tremendous benefits for people with disabilities: improved health and physical well-being; increased self esteem and confidence and improved social opportunities, all of which result in a better quality of life and independence.
WheelPower delivers a comprehensive programme of sporting opportunities for disabled people of all abilities which includes:
• Introduction to wheelchair sport for children
• Opportunities for recently disabled people to play
sport during their rehabilitation
• Training and competitions for adults and juniors
• Education and training for officials and volunteers
• Provision of sporting facilities at Stoke Mandeville
• Sports wheelchairs for young disabled people and
