About us

Chiltern Open Air Museum is a much loved community resource based in Chalfont St Giles.  The Museum rescues historic buildings from across the Chilterns under threat from developers and rebuilds and preserves them in a traditional Chilterns landscape for the inspiration and learning of present and future generations.

The Museum now has over 33 rescued historic buildings that were the workplaces or homes of ordinary people from within the Chilterns and a working historic farm with livestock.

Theme days enable visitors to see and practise skills demonstrated by craftsmen and women and thereby gain insight into the ways of life of their own ancestors.

The Museum's award winning learning programme, linked to the National Curriculum, provides a fantastic outdoor learning experience which is particulary beneficial for non traditional learners such as children with special educational needs or those on the autistic spectrum.

Where possible, the Museum subsidises visits for pupils from disadvantaged areas so that no child misses out on its unique learning experience on the basis of cost.

The Museum receives no government funding and aims to break even each year.  It relies on the generosity of supporters and grant making trusts to continue its work to preserve the past of ordinary people for the education of present and future generations.

We hope you will support the Museum so that it can continue to provide learning and enjoyment for the community for many years to come.

Thank you for your support and good luck!
